Cranes are revered in Chinese culture as auspicious symbols of longevity, high status and spiritual significance. Known as the “First-Class Bird” and the “Bird of Immortality”, the Red Crowned Crane is often associated with long life and good fortune. Its enduring bond with its mate has also made the crane a symbol of fidelity, marital bliss and domestic harmony, with a pair of cranes traditionally believed to bless a marriage. Royal Selangor’s Crane collection pays homage to this magnificent and deeply symbolic bird through a series of sculptural designs inspired by its graceful form and the clouds it is often depicted amongst. Intricate open-work detailing creates patterns of pierced clouds and cranes, giving each piece a sense of lightness and movement while allowing the pewter itself to become part of the imagery.
